Exploring Epigraphic Heritage: A Visit to the Lapidarium

On Saturday, November 30th, undergraduate and master’s students of classical studies had the opportunity to delve into the epigraphic heritage of Serbia, during a visit to the lapidarium located in Belgrade’s Kalemegdan Fortress.

The event began with a lecture by Professor Vojin Nedeljković, who introduced the students to the study of epigraphy and its importance for understanding the Classical heritage in Serbia. Following the lecture, students participated in a hands-on workshop led by Professor Nedeljković and PROMETHEUS team members Jelena Vukojević and Danilo Savić. The students had the chance to practice reading and interpreting the inscriptions displayed in the lapidarium, gaining practical skills and a first-hand understanding of the material.

The lapidarium contains several dozen inscriptions, primarily found in Singidunum and its surroundings. The inscriptions are part of the National Museum’s permanent exhibition, and have been displayed in Kalemegdan’s ammunition depot since the mid-19th century.

This visit was organised in accordance with the activities outlined in the Work Package 5 “Dissemination and Communication”. The visit was made possible thanks to the initiative of Professor Nenad Ristović from the Department of Classical Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, and in coordination with Bojana Borić-Brešković, the director of the National Museum of Serbia.
