What is the Prometheus Project?

With this project we delve into the captivating realm of ancient Greek and Roman inscriptions, where time-worn stone tablets bear eloquent messages from civilizations long past.

Epigraphy is like the social media of the ancient world. Ancient civilizations didn’t tweet or Instagram; they etched their updates in stone or metal. They had various "posts": public inscriptions were akin to official government tweets, private ones to direct messages, funerary inscriptions to Facebook memorial pages, and graffiti to the original wall posts. These enduring communication methods reveal that humans have always been eager to share their lives and thoughts, regardless of the era.

 

The Prometheus Project is a collaborative effort to digitize such rich epigraphic heritage of the Southeastern Europea and the Balkans, involving Institutions from North Macedonia, Serbia, and Bulgaria. It will build up their capacities to create digital epigraphic corpora, to implement the existing and to develop new resources and models. The paramount significance lies in the incorporation of inscriptions from all three nations within digital collection. The significant ancient Greek and Roman epigraphic heritage in these countries necessitates such a digitization initiative. The aim is to weave together the threads of history, culture, and education by making these treasures freely available online. This way, anyone, anywhere can explore these historical markers, not just as relics of the past, but as living pieces of European heritage that continue to inspire us today.
