Hand description
Letter size
height 0.9-1.2 cm.
Layout description
A recessed, smoothed field in the pediment, 8.8 cm high, whose center is occupied by a flat circle at the level of the frame, which was probably meant—through coloring—to represent a shield. The first line of the inscription is placed on both sides of the shield, and the second lies on the lower frame of the pediment, 2.2 cm high. The main part of the inscription is located below the relief depiction, which occupies the larger central portion of the stele.
Inscription field
height 13.5 cm., width cm.
Decoration
Main image Mother of the Gods holding tympanum in her left hand, in her right hand phiale; with a lion lying on her lap. In the middle of the monument there is an altar with an animal, most probably a bull. On the right there is an image of the priestess making a libation on the altar.

To good fortune! To the listening Pontic Mother of the Gods. Zouke, daughter of Heraclides, and wife of Theagenes, son of Moschion, priest of Dionysus the Founder, served as a priestess of the goddess, gathered beautiful flowers together with the female citizens, organized sacrifices and processions, and sweetened the council and the entire female population according to the customs of fathers and ancestors.

Commentary

The dedication serves as a kind of report shedding light on the festivals of the goddess, celebrated by the female part of the population. It mentions the customary sacrifices and processions, but also the gathering of flowers (probably connected with the goddess’s spring festival), banquets for the women citizens and members of the council, and the “sweetening” — the distribution of sweets and sweetened wine. As with other inscriptions related to the temple and its cult, the impression is that the veneration of the Pontic Mother was expressed mainly through public rituals (or at least those publicly attested) rather than through mysteries restricted to a small circle of initiates. The priestess bears a Thracian name, although her patronymic is Greek. From the final phrase of the text, one may conclude that her ancestors also held similar offices; of course, the emphasis on “the custom of the fathers and forefathers” may equally reflect her desire to affirm belonging to local traditions. It is also noteworthy that in many families, Thracian names were preferred for women, while men bore the more common Greek or Roman ones. The husband of Zouke is identified as a priest of the city’s principal god, Dionysos, which may suggest a connection with one of the old Dionysopolitan priestly lineages.
